Top south west Sardinia beaches
Tuerredda beach, Teulada | Sardinia, Italy |
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily), with the total coastal length of about 1666 km so there is really plenty of space for things that Sardinia is famous for - gorgeous Sardinia beaches and sheer, rocky coast with thousands of amazingly beautiful bays. The best way to explore various Sardinia beaches is to go by car on a Sardinia road trip. Just imagine those long winding roads connecting one spectacular sight to another. Bend after bend, the views will take your breath away. Be sure to check our driving in Sardinia road trip guide.
Pula beach | Sardinia, Italy |
Also, if you have time and you don't care about beach facilities, it's absolutely great to find your own beaches on the island.
There are so many and so different beaches in Sardinia that you should see at least a dozen to fully enjoy each and every summery moment on the endless island.
Top south west Sardinia beaches | Pula region
Santa Margherita di Pula beach | Sardinia, Italy |
Pula is a community in the Province of Cagliari (about 25 km southwest of Cagliari) where warm sea holidays are combined with the ancient history of Sardinia.
Pula is famous for a series of fine, white sandy beaches (in the summer the seaside districts are literally filled with tourists) and the ancient archeological park of the Phoenician city of Nora.
It's a great starting point for sunbathing on the beautiful beaches of southern Sardinia, as well as for exploring the capital.
Pula beaches | Santa Margherita di Pula
Santa Margherita di Pula beach | Sardinia, Italy |
Santa Margherita di Pula beach is the longest stretch of sand near Cagliari (2.6 km) consisting of several beautiful coves. It's also one of the most popular beaches in southern Sardinia, perfect for the family holidays due to very clear, shallow water with a flat entrance.
Spiaggia di Santa Margherita di Pula is a very safe beach with numerous hotels and accommodations next to it. There is also a large water sports center and the climbing park in the pine forest directly behind the beach.
Travel tip: there are numerous shopping facilities near the main street
Top south west Sardinia beaches | Chia region
Su Giudeu beach, Chia | Sardinia, Italy |
Chia is a seaside district of the inland Domus de Maria on the south-west coast of Sardinia (about 42 km from Cagliari) famous for its magnificent sand dunes that tower up to 30 meters high (note that it's strictly forbidden to walk on the dunes!).
Arguably, Chia has the most beautiful beaches on the southern coast of Sardinia with fine sand and emerald sea, surrounded by creatively shaped, granite rocks. It's also a haven for families and watersports enthusiasts.
Travel tip: there are backwaters and ponds with pink flamingos at the back of many beaches in Chia.
Chia beaches | Campana Dune
Campana Dune beach, Chia | Sardinia, Italy |
Campana Dune is a beautiful 400 m beach that looks like it was taken from the picture. Its soft, white sand and crystal clear blue water make it a real pearl of the Sardinia island. The beach is also very clean (no stones and no seaweed) and sheltered from the winds on both sides by the amazing dunes that reach up to 20 meters high.
Spiaggia di Campana Dune is very-well provisioned and is a perfect place for families with small children.
Travel tip: the prices for the Campana Dune beach equipment can be quite excessive.
Chia beaches | Su Giudeu
Su Giudeu beach, Chia | Sardinia, Italy |
Su Giudeu is probably the best beach in the whole Chia area. It's long, wide, spacious, clean, with a flat entrance into the perfect blue water and numerous facilities like bathing establishments, water sports services and kiosks.
Spiaggia di Su Giudeu island (150 m from the shore) can usually be reached by walking on the sandy shoal and from its top, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire Chia coastline.
Travel tip: there is an amazing Stangioni de su Sali pond with pink flamingos at the back of the Su Giudeu beach.
Chia beaches | Su Portu
Su Portu beach, Chia | Sardinia, Italy |
Horseshoe-shaped Su Portu beach is quite short (only 250 m) and offers very little facilities, but it's also not too crowded and so unusual to visit. Even the water is a little different in color, due to the rocks beneath the surface.
Spiaggia di Su Portu is bordered by a high cliff that offers wonderful views on the whole Chia area. If you are looking for a quiet place on a nice beach, this one is for you.
Travel tip: if you plan to go more than a few meters into the water, the surface gets stony and a bit sharp, so we advise wearing water shoes.
Chia beaches | Sa Colonia
Sa Colonia beach, Chia | Sardinia, Italy |
Sa Colonia is a wide and beautiful beach with white-amber sand, located between the Tower of Chia on the left (separating it from Su Portu beach) and Monte Cogoni on the right (approx. 1 km long).
Spiaggia di Sa Colonia is a tropical dream beach, perfect for long walks under the setting sun.
Travel tip: Sa Colonia beach is one of the best destinations for surfers in the southern Sardinia, due to exposition to strong winds (avoid in case of Mistral winds).
Top south west Sardinia beaches | Teulada region
Tuerredda beach, Teulada | Sardinia, Italy |
Teulada is a very natural and pristine region, located about 40 km southwest of Cagliari. Its resorts are not as popular as Chia's, therefore there are fewer crowds in the season and prices tend to be cheaper.
Teulada is famous for unforgettable mountain landscapes and jaw-dropping scenery that will make any holiday picture a memorable one.
Outside the region's best-known beach (Tuerredda), Teulada seems wild and in love with strong Sardinia customs.
Teulada beaches | Tuerredda
Tuerredda beach panorama, Teulada | Sardinia, Italy |
Tuerredda beach is one of the ten most beautiful beaches and the best snorkeling spot in Sardinia. This relatively short beach (0.5 km) is located between Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento and is nicely sheltered from the wind.
Spiaggia di Tuerredda will delight you with a breathtaking view of the crystal clear, shallow water, that is almost always calm and inviting. Turredda beach is therefore ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There is also a little island covered with vegetation not far away from the shore, with smooth rocks, perfect for sunbathing.
Tuerredda beach, Teulada | Sardinia, Italy |
The marvelous coastline surrounding Tuerredda beach is jugged and uneven, with amazing rock formations and multiple great spots to admire wonderful Sardinia landscapes.
Tuerredda beach will also surprise you with the quality of services available. From nice bars and restaurants to unforgettable trips in rubber dinghies.
Travel tip: Tuerredda is a must-see beach in Sardinia often seen on postcards, therefore we advise to visit it earlier or outside of the season to avoid crowds.
Teulada beaches | di Piscinni
di Piscinni beach, Teulada | Sardinia, Italy |
Di Piscinni beach is, in fact, an enclave of Domus de Maria in the Teulada region, but it perfectly matches the whole Teulada coastline, because it seems rough and wild, mainly thanks to the Mediterranean scrub stretching from the cliffs.
Spiaggia di Piscinni is characterized by fine white sand and wonderful crystal-clear water that takes on color between green and turquoise. The seabed is sandy and low with the presence of some rocks.
Travel tip: if you are looking for a secluded, pristine beach in Sardinia, this one is for you, although don't expect useful beach facilities there.
Top south west Sardinia beaches | Porto Pino region
Porto Pino beach, Porto Pino | Sardinia, Italy |
A small town and harbor of Porto Pino (a part of Sant’Anna Arresi commune, about 80 km from Cagliari) is a reference tourist resort in south Sardinia and an amazing place to visit, offering a variety of experiences ideal for any type of tourist.
Porto Pino is characterized by very rare Aleppo pines, a system of ponds (a home for numerous species of birds) and the canal connecting the sea and the lagoon area (also serving as a port for 111 boats).
Travel tip: there is a very nice camping site in the Porto Pino precinct.
Porto Pino beaches | Porto Pino and Le Dune
Porto Pino beach, Porto Pino | Sardinia, Italy |
Porto Pino is the main beach in the area, successfully fighting for a place among the best beaches of Sardinia. The beach is quite wide and long (4 km), while its fine white and white-gray sand and shallow water (even far from the shore) makes it a perfect destination for families with kids.
Spiaggia di Porto Pino can be divided into two parts: Porto Pino and Le Dune. One kilometer long Le Dune beach (also known as Is Arenas Biancas) is a unique and almost dreamy expanse of soft sandy dunes that tower up to 30 meters high.
View on Le Dune beach, Porto Pino | Sardinia, Italy |
Porto Pino beach has all the necessary infrastructure, attractions and a large parking lot, so you can spend a whole day there, but remember that in the season it is always full there.
Travel tip: Le Dune beach is usually accessible only in the summer months because it's located within the military zone of Capo Teulada.
