Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily), with the total coastal length of about 1666 km so there is really plenty of space for things that Sardinia is famous for - gorgeous Sardinia beaches and sheer, rocky coast with thousands of amazingly beautiful bays. Sardinia island has everything you need for a wonderful, carefree holiday.

The best way to explore various Sardinia beaches is to go by car on a Sardinia road trip. Just imagine those long winding roads connecting one spectacular sight to another. Bend after bend, the views will take your breath away. Be sure to check our driving in Sardinia road trip guide.
Also, if you have time and you don't care about beach facilities, it's absolutely great to find your own beaches on the island.
There are so many and so different beaches in Sardinia that you should see at least a dozen to fully enjoy each and every summery moment on the endless island.

There are no less than 3 very unique beaches in Cagliari: Poetto, Calamosca and Cala Fighera. As befits the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari beaches are neat and very close to many tourist attractions. There is no better place to rest after long hours of strolling through the city.
Cagliari beaches are located on both sides of the Devil’s Saddle - headland overlooking the Gulf of Cagliari, offering beautiful landscape views. The legend says that the devil decided to settle there, but he managed only to drop his saddle before the angels drove him out.

The name "Poetto" probably takes its origin from the Catalan “Pohuet”, that means “well”, due to the presence of several wells for rainwater harvesting in the Devil’s Saddle.
Poetto is the longest beach in Sardinia (about 9 km from the Devil's Saddle, looking down over Marina Piccola, up to the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena). Poetto is also very broad, while it's sandy and shallow seabed stretch for tens of meters into the sea (it's family-friendly).

Poetto is a nice, well-maintained and well-equipped beach with every possible facility provided. Due to its location and convenient transportation, Poetto beach and its surroundings are the center of entertainment in Cagliari (especially at night there are great clubs like Il Lido with live music, discos, dance lessons or karaoke).
Sports lovers will fall in love with Poetto beach, due to the great space for various activities like running, cycling, surfing, kitesurfing, sailing, swimming and so on.

How to get to Poetto beach: PF and PQ buses run every 10-20 minutes from Via Roma to Poetto beach (15 minutes and € 1,20 per person ).
Travel tip: the water can be crystal-clear and the sand is fine, but there are much better beaches all around Sardinia, although not so close to the city with all its attractions.
Travel tip: Poetto beach can be quite crowded in the high season, so it's worth waking up earlier and avoiding siesta hours.
Travel tip: you just have to try something from the Poetto beach kiosks (chioschi), which are located along the seafront.
Cagliari beaches | Calamosca and Cala Fighera

On the opposite coast of the Devil's Saddle, there are two hidden Cagliari beaches of Calamosca and Cala Fighera:
1. Calamosca beach is a small cove, secluded and quiet, offering fine white sand and not very urban views.
How to get to Calamosca beach: take a bus (5-11) from Via Roma street. Alternatively, there is a path from Poetto beach that leads over the Devil's Saddle, but you will need to climb up the headland (we recommend taking hiking shoes).
2. Cala Fighera beach is actually a tiny small pebble cove and a small paradise, great for jumping into the crystal clear water.
How to get to Cala Fighera beach: either walk from Calamosca beach or choose the same hiking path that leads from Poetto beach.
Travel tip: there is a nice restaurant above Cala Fighera beach (La Paillote), that offers amazing views on the Cagliari's Bay of the Angels.

Villasimius is a community in the Province of Cagliari (about 35 kilometers east from Cagliari) and one of the most popular Sardinia resorts.
Villasimius region is famous for its spectacular coastline, with majestic cliffs and long white sandy beaches that are rare even on an island filled with so many natural wonders.
There are so many beaches near Villasimius to choose from, but we limited ourselves by picking our 3 favorite Villasimius beaches.

Solanas beach is nice and long (1.2 km), but you will find more beautiful beaches in Villasimius region. Despite this, Spiaggia di Solanas is probably the most peaceful beach in the whole area. Solanas is also a very natural beach, with thick vegetation behind it and has light-colored sand and turquoise shimmering water, perfect for spending a relaxing day, far from the sometimes crowded Villasimius beaches.
Travel tip: there is a tourist village of the same name that provides beach equipment.

Spiaggia di Campus is a very well-equipped beach, located between the villages of Porto Sa Ruxi and Campu Longu. It's also one of the longest beaches in Villasimius (750 m).
Campus beach is a perfect place for those who want to enjoy canoeing, windsurfing and pedal boats. There is even a diving center nearby.
You will be amazed by its golden sand, crystal clear, transparent sea (with a little greenish hue) and a wide, shallow seabed.
Travel tip: Campus beach is ideal for long walks at sunset.
Villasimius beaches | Porto Giunco

Famous Porto Giunco is "the" must-see beach in Villasimius region, often called "a slice of the Caribbean". No wonder, because its fine white sand and amazingly beautiful, turquoise water are usually seen on Sardinia postcards. It's also quite hard to find such a stunning beach overlooking the sea on one side and a lagoon with flamingos on the other.
Spiaggia di Porto Giunco is one of the best-equipped beaches in Sardinia with free parking nearby and all the bathing and rental services available. Moreover, Porto Giunco beach is perfect for families with children, couples and those looking for relaxation or sport.

Unfortunately, Porto Giunco beach is surrounded by hotels and residences so it can be quite crowded in the season.
Travel tip: Porto Giunco beach by itself is already amazing, but we highly recommend going a little further and climbing the hill with the Torre di Porto Giunco tower, which offers an absolutely breathtaking view.

Castiadas is an agricultural region located between Villasimius and Costa Rei. It might not be as famous as those two (Castiadas beaches are also notoriously confused with the more northerly Costa Rei beaches), but Castiadas is one of the quieter places in Sardinia. Fewer tourists mean that you can enjoy serene and truly pristine Sardinia.
Castiadas is 13 km of marvelous coast, immersed in green trees and soft sandy dunes, so it would be a great loss not to visit it while in the south east Sardinia.

Cala Sinzias beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in south east Sardinia that will enchant you with a mix of golden and white sand and beautiful rock formations.
Spiaggia di Cala Sinzias is a very long beach (about 2 km), protected by the headland and surrounded by a grove of eucalyptus and pine trees.
Arguably, Cala Sinzias beach has the cleanest, crystal clear water in Sardinia. Additionally, the beach is often windswept, which creates amusing waves that drag to the shore (surfers are a common sight).

You will see amazing rock formations surrounding the beach, that you can easily climb. They offer a spectacular and very picturesque view of the turquoise horizon.
Travel tip: unfortunately, the seabed is not smooth here and falls down quite quickly, therefore Cala Sinzias beach is not suitable for small children.
Travel tip: Cala Sinzias beach has many facilities (especially in the nearby hotel area) and is wheelchair accessible.

It's not easy to write objectively about Costa Rei because its name (the King's Coast) wasn't given by accident. This fascinating stretch of coast is a natural paradise that is a must-see while visiting Sardinia.
In fact, Costa Rei is one long, sandy beach, that changes name several times all along its 10 km. Costa Rei beach starts from the Peppino’s Rock in the south and goes up to Porto Pirastu and Capo Ferrato in the north.

Costa Rei beach is perfectly suited for any kind of visitors and it's long enough to accommodate thousands of tourists. Since you don't have to be scared of crowds, you can just enjoy Costa Rei relaxing atmosphere and the variety of choices of all kinds of water sports (snorkeling, sailing, diving, as well as cave diving among underwater wrecks).
Arguably, there is no better place in the whole Sardinia for long walks on the beach, only interrupted by occasional jumps into the beautiful turquoise and emerald sea.

Travel tip: Costa Rei beach is geared towards families with children and is very safe.
Travel tip: Costa Rei beach is one of the best places in Sardinia to experience magical sunsets above the Tyrrhenian Sea.
